Professor Lucia Helena Mascaro has been named to the Superior Council of FAPESP.

Professor Lucia Helena Mascaro Sales has been appointed to join the Superior Council of the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP). The appointment was formalized by a decree signed by the Governor of the State of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas, and published in the Official Gazette of the State of São Paulo last week, on January 21, 2026. Professor Sales was included in the shortlist of three candidates selected by higher education and research institutions in the State of São Paulo, as reported by FAPESP in December 2025, for the position with a term starting in February 2026.

Beyond her position as a Full Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar), Lucia Helena Mascaro Sales is Director of Research at the Center for the Development of Functional Materials (CDMF), one of the Research, Innovation and Dissemination Centers (CEPIDs) supported by FAPESP, and is a member of the Center of Excellence for Research in Sustainable Chemistry (CERSusChem). At CERSusChem, she served as Director of Dissemination from 2017 to 2022 in a project funded by FAPESP and co-financed by the pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). She is currently one of the principal investigators of a FAPESP Thematic Project (Grant No. 2021/12394-0), focused on the development of more sustainable methods and processes for the chemical, pharmaceutical, and materials industries, with the aim of reducing environmental impact, resource consumption, and waste generation.

At UFSCar, Professor Sales was Coordinator of the Graduate Program in Chemistry (PPGQ) from 2016 to 2019, the same program in which she completed her Master’s and PhD degrees, and she currently works as a faculty member and advisor. Her scientific research focuses on Physical Chemistry, with interests in energy, hydrogen and ammonia production, electrochemistry, electrodeposition of metals, alloys and semiconductors, and corrosion. Her designation to the FAPESP Superior Council represents recognition of her scientific and institutional contributions and further strengthens the presence of researchers working in sustainable chemistry in strategic spaces for the formulation of public policies in science, technology, and innovation in the State of São Paulo.
